AMC’s The Walking Dead has proven that it doesn’t shy away from brutality and that pretty much any character could die — or worse — with very little notice. While the series so far has seen more than its share of shocking deaths, this past weekend’s season premiere saw yet another jaw-dropping moment that cost the group of survivors one of their most beloved companions. Now the show’s cast and crew have come together for a touching retrospective tribute to this latest of the fallen.

Needless to say, there are SPOILERS HERE, so don’t scroll down if you haven’t watched this week’s episode yet.

Seriously, BIG SPOILERS below. Flee, you fools!

Yes, it’s time for us all to mourn the loss of Herschel’s leg. It was a good limb, as limbs go. It held Herschel to stand upright, to walk, perhaps occasionally to jog for a bit before he got winded and had to sit down. Unfortunately, it was also made of that tasty, tasty human meat that the zombies so crave. Now Herschel has been cursed doubly: first by being the subject of Rick Grimes’ impromptu field surgery, and secondly by now being left as a one-legged man during a zombie apocalypse, which sounds like the punchline to a joke but which isn’t remotely funny if you’re the one trying to hop away from the shambling hordes of ravenous undead.

If they haven’t already thought of it, I’d like to suggest they replace the leg with an automatic weapon of some kind, just like in Planet Terror.
