Though it started off a little rocky, season 4 of AMC’s hit zombie drama The Walking Dead is easily the best of the franchise so far, especially the second half of the season. And it ends on one hell of a cliffhanger to boot. One aspect of the season finale that garnered a lot of attention was the last line. Rick (Andrew Lincoln) says what is probably the most badass thing he’s ever said, something that makes fans of the comics have hope that he’s on his way to becoming the character he is in the Robert Kirkman’s books. But this is TV, so he can’t say exactly what most of us would in this situation, you know, censors and all, but now, in this video, you can see an alternate take. Be warned, there are swears.

Season 4 ends with Rick and most of his gang of zombie apocalypse survivors trapped in a cargo container in Terminus, a place they thought was a safe haven and turned out to be something very different. Gazing out of a small opening, a stern, grim look on his face, Rick turns towards the camera and says, “They’re screwing with the wrong people.”

You get the sentiment, Rick plans to go a-killin’ first chance he gets, but the way he delivers this line, especially the first time you hear it, gives you pause. You’re like, “wait a minute, that’s not the word that should go there, ‘screwing’? Really Rick?” Again, you can’t say real swears on TV, you can show a walking corpse munching on entrails, but god help you if you say the word “fuck.” It comes off sounding silly more than tough, and almost as soon as the episode aired, the folks behind The Walking Dead announced that the Blu-ray would come with an alternate take, which you see above, where Rick says, “They’re fucking with the wrong people.” Alas, satisfaction.

The pattern of The Walking Dead over the years is to have a gap in time between events of the finale of one season and the debut of the next. Given the nature of the ending of season four, that’s not a realistic option, and we’ve already heard that they plan to “hit the ground running.” At San Diego Comic-Con a few weeks ago, we heard that the first five or six minutes of season five even managed to shock the cast the first time they saw it, which sounds promising.

They also released this intense new trailer for The Walking Dead. While it certainly supports the theory that we’re going to get off to a fast start, this footage also gives you a good idea of where the story goes after they main core leaves Terminus. You also get a glimpse at what happened to Beth (Emily Kinney).

The Walking Dead returns for season 5 on Sunday, October 12.
