Walking Dead Beer With Brains And Star Trek Brew Add Geek Cred To Your Drinking

Craft beer is all the rage these days. Everywhere you look another brewery is popping up, many so small that the term microbrewery is even a bit of an overstatement. In such a saturated, competitive marketplace, you have to do something to make your product stand out. Maybe your IPA is the hoppiest, perhaps you infused that ESB with marijuana, or you could brew the latest batch of your zombie-themed stout with actual brains. Yeah, that’s a thing that has now happened. And in case that’s not nerdy enough, there’s also a Star Trek beer hitting the market later this year.
Philadelphia-based hops merchants Dock Street Brewing Co. are apparently huge fans of AMC’s hit zombie series The Walking Dead, so it only seems natural they’d create a blend to honor their favorite Sunday evening viewing option. Their Dock Street Walker, a title that could easily be mistaken for a reference to a prostitute, is an American pale stout, brewed with the usual ingredients like hops, wheat, barley, and even cranberries for a touch of fruitiness and some antioxidants, and, oh yeah, brains. Don’t worry, imbibing one of these won’t automatically make you a cannibal, these are roasted goat brains we’re talking about here.
Here’s what Dock Street has to say about their newest brew:
Dock Street Walker (7.2% ABV) is an American Pale Stout, brewed with substantial amounts of malted wheat, oats, and flaked barley for a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Fuggle hops provide delicate, earthy notes, while the cranberries create a sinister, bloody hue, and a slight tartness. The pre-sparge-brain-addition provides the beer with intriguing, subtle smoke notes. In true walker fashion, don’t be surprised if its head doesn’t hang around forever.
“Pre-sparge-brain-addition?” That’s a phrase you don’t run across too often.
The Dock Steet Walker makes its debut on March 30th to celebrate the season four finale of The Walking Dead. Don’t rush out to your local purveyor of fine spirits, however, because this will only be available at their West Philly pub for now. Who knows, maybe this will spread across the country like the zombie plague and infest a city near you.
On a more futuristic note, CBS just announced the first officially licensed Star Trek beer: Klingon Warnog. I don’t know that you should really set out to drink a beer that sounds like it likes it is bound to make you more warlike, but maybe I’m just being a stick in the mud. Then again, the beer is describes as, “a bold beer suited for the harsh Klingon lifestyle,” so make of that what you will. You’d also be forgiven for mistaking this beverage for an energy drink.
Warnog is brewed by Tin Man Brewing from Indianapolis, and will be unveiled later this month in Las Vegas at Nightclub & Bar tradeshow. Eventually it will make its way around the country, so keep an eye out for this so you can party like a Klingon.
