We may have to wait until September to finally lay eyes on the long awaited Riddick, but that’s not going to stop star Vin Diesel from pumping up the movie. He’s been the most consistent source of news on the film, a passion project from the beefy actor and director David Twohy, and now he’s shared a moody new photo.

Diesel took to his Facebook page to unveil the image. As you can clearly see, the titular badass is standing in a downpour in the middle of the night. Someone should get him an umbrella or a raincoat, but he doesn’t need a flashlight because he has those fancy, surgically enhanced eyes that allow him to see in the dark. And that looks suspiciously like a movie monster lurking in the shadows. The photo is dark and grainy, but it’s hard not to get excited about the idea of Vin Diesel fighting sinister beasties.

The third in the series that began with Pitch Black and continued with The Chronicles of Riddick, the latest film is reportedly more in line with the first. The story is less sprawling than Chronicle, which lost a lot of focus attempting to establish an entire universe worth of mythology. Riddick has already earned an R rating, presumably for the violence that is inherent when your protagonist is a mass-murdering outlaw.

Riddick has been left stranded on a planet that looks to be entirely lifeless. That’s not the case, however, and before long he finds himself in a life-or-death struggle with the creatures that inhabit the desolate world. His only way out is to signal the swarm of bounty hunters on his trail. When they arrive, Riddick encounters a brutal new breed of mercenary, and one familiar face that is none too pleased to see him.

Riddick co-stars Karl Urban and Katee Sackhoff, and opens on September 6, 2013.
