Vin Diesel certainly likes to take care of fans of his Riddick films. The New York born action star has previously dropped images from the third in a trilogy of films that includes 2000’s Pitch Black and 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick, and now he’s at it again.
Diesel posted a new pic to his personal Facebook page. The image shows him in full Riddick regalia, dark glasses and all, clutching something that could be a weapon, or could be the skull of some beasty he dispatched. For those of you who don’t know, Riddick is a super space badass. No prison in the universe can hold him, not even the one buried deep inside the husk of a scorched planet. He can kill you with a stray tin can, but darn it, he’s got a heart of gold beating inside that beefy man chest.
Attached to the picture Diesel wrote: “Last night I was invited, by the director, to the editing room… to see an early first cut of the new Riddick…WOW!!! P.s. I was so affected/excited… I couldn’t sleep….GRRRR!!!” You know it must be good if Vin Diesel growls about it.
The road has been long for Diesel and director David Twohy, who directed the first two films (and also wrote Waterworld). Pitch Black was a surprise critical and commercial success; Chronicles of Riddick, not so much. It’s a weird movie because it feels like it a part of some larger, sprawling mythology, but it never fully develops the world where it takes place. Financing for the picture fell through, then money was raised independently, and then they finally scored a distribution deal. It has been a series of ups and downs. There’s still no official release date, but we could hopefully see the picture in early 2013.
