vin dieselWith about eight months until it’s released, it’s likely that we’ll get a first look at Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, along with Transformers: Age of Extinction, in a few weeks during the Super Bowl. The new Marvel movie is a big mystery in terms of its box office, though it’s quality seems assured with director James Gunn at the helm and with an all-star cast of high-caliber celebrities. One of those big names is Vin Diesel. The Fast and Furious star looks to tuck another blockbuster movie under his belt, Diesel recently started voice work for the character Groot for the new cosmic comic book movie.

Diesel posted his experience and his thoughts on the voice work process on his personal Facebook page. Apparently, as he started to get ready to give Groot a voice, an old familiar face appeared and reminded him of the last time he voiced a monosyllabic big man, The Iron Giant. Diesel writes:

Some of you may remember the character I voiced back in 1998…Last month I had the opportunity to voice a new character, on the Disney lot… and I was shocked to see the same sound engineer, Doc, who was there when Brad Bird was directing me 15 years earlier, as the Iron Giant. As artists we are susceptible to clocking omens… and this was a great sign.”

It’s hard to believe that Diesel voiced the titular character in Brad Bird’s directorial debut. While the character only said a few words, he managed to convey much emotion and pathos in the big guy. We know he could do it for The Iron Giant, so it’s going to be interesting to see him do it again for Guardians of the Galaxy and Groot, who only says one thing, “I Am Groot.”

Diesel concluded his post, which has a photo from his recording session, “As I worked, with James Gunn, breathing life into GROOT… I saw more and more of the film… wow! This summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy, is not only going to blow you away, it could very well break Marvel records. Grateful for the opportunity to make magic.”

While it’s unclear which records he thinks Guardians will break, it’s unlikely that the new Marvel movie would beat out the current highest box office earner, The Avengers. To date, The Avengers has grossed $1.5 billion worldwide. I don’t care how popular Guardians might turn out to be, it’s not beating that number.

Recently, Diesel posted a picture of himself with a bust of Groot as a way to confirm that he would voice the giant tree-like alien. He also announced that Fast & Furious 7 was pushed from July 11, 2014 to April 10, 2015 due to production set backs after the tragic death of Paul Walker.

Guardians of the Galaxy follows Peter Quill, a half human and alien who is at the center of a manhunt after he steals a mysterious orb, believed to be one of the Infinity Gems. In order to escape, Quill is forced into an uneasy alliance with a group of cosmic misfits and outlaws that includes Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Groot, and Drax the Destroyer. When Quill learns of the orb’s true power, he must rally his new team to save the galaxy from a mysterious new threat.

The movie also stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Benicio del Toro, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, Olivia Lovibond, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close, and hits theaters everywhere on August 1.
