Vin Diesel is an amazing human animal. Not only is he a huge nerd—the man is a long-time Dungeons & Dragons player—who makes ridiculous action films, but he’s totally down with his fans, using social media to drop bits of news about his various projects. Of all the famous people out there, he looks like he’s enjoying it as much as anyone. Because he is a strange man, when Universal decided that they’re going to develop another Riddick movie, he just had to dance. And he filmed himself. And posted it on the Internet. And in the middle he stopped to announce the news to his Facebook followers. And then danced some more. The whole video goes on for seven-and-a-half minutes.
It’s a well known fact how much Diesel loves playing the space badass. Last summer’s Riddick, the third in the so-called “Furyan Chronicles,” was a labor of love that almost didn’t happen. After the second film, the bloated Chronicles of Riddick, tanked in epic fashion, it looked like we wouldn’t get any more. Diesel and director David Twohy, however, weren’t deterred by failure. They got funding, lost funding, found more, Diesel put up his own house as collateral at one point, and somehow, someway, they cobbled together a movie almost ten years after the previous entry.
Riddick wasn’t a huge hit when it opened in August, but considering the relatively modest production budget, it performed well. Overall it raked in $98 million worldwide, not bad for a movie that cost $38 million. It isn’t the greatest movie, but it’s a good bit of pulpy sci-fi fun, which is exactly what you want it to be. But much like Dredd, which opened a year earlier, Riddick has found big success on the home video market. (It should be noted that Riddick did perform significantly better in theaters than Dredd.) A combination of good box office receipts, strong home video sales, and a proven ability to deliver a film on the cheap, is probably the reason why Universal wants more.
After shaking his ass and lip-synching to Katy Perry’s song “Dark Horse,” the Fast and Furious star paused to share the good news with fans who were patient enough to stick around. Here’s what he had to say:
I’m just excited, and happy, and I’m shouting out to you guys to say thank you. Universal just called me and told me Riddick is number one on the DVD charts. There’s no way Riddick would have been made without you guys. You know that. And you guys have been a part of our page since 2012 and remember how arduous a road it was to get the movie made, and to make it rated ‘R,’ and to do it with such a low budget. It’s a win for all of us and I really, really thank you so much. Yeah, I’m excited, and of course, Universal also says they want to develop the next one.
It’s really goddamned adorable. And just in case you couldn’t tell how psyched Diesel is about this situation, he continues get his groove on for another three or four minutes.
What do you think of this news? Are you excited for the further adventures of Riddick? Or do you just want Vin Diesel to quit acting all together and post more videos of him lip-synching pop songs?
