Unused Battleship Alien Design Reveal Good Imagination In A Bad Movie

Remember Battleship? The giant alien-invasion summer movie that was slated to be one of the biggest blockbusters of 2012 is now available on Blu-ray/DVD. Although the movie was a one of the most disappointing movies of 2012, the movie’s creature and alien creations weren’t bad. If only director Peter Berg could’ve put them in a good movie.

One of the bonus features from the release illustrates how ILM animators and sculptors created concept models of the alien race in Battleship. “Pete was very intent on having a not-slimy alien,” explains the film’s producer Sarah Aubrey. The aliens in Battleship were more functional rather than stylistic and resembled humanoid beings with foreign characteristics. The animators explain that the aliens wear organic mech suits that interact with their skin to act more like one being. They also describe the special alien “quill beards” that were made out of the same material as human fingernails. Here’s the clip, via io9.com.

For all the imagination and detailed alien design, Battleship is still a bad movie. If the filmmakers put as much thought into creating interesting characters as they did dreaming up alien life-forms, maybe the movie would be more than a loud, bright, and surprisingly bland action movie. When the aliens are more believable than your lead’s acting, you’ve got a problem on your hands.
