Cloud Atlas sounds like it could easily become a sprawling, jumbled mess of historical eras, international locations, and intricate themes. Then again, if the Wachowski siblings (The Matrix) and co-director Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) manage to pull off this ambitious project, based on the novel by David Mitchell, it could blow your little mind.
We’ll have to wait until October 26th to see how Cloud Atlas turns out, unless you’re going to be at the Toronto International Film Festival where the film will premier. Hot on the heels of the first two official photos earlier today, twenty more have fallen into our laps from EW.
Beyond the filmmakers behind the project, Cloud Atlas has an insane cast of international talent on board. The ensemble includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, Keith David, James D’Archy, Jim Sturgess, Jim Broadbent, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, and Zhou Xun. Is that four Oscar-winners? Each actor appears as multiple characters in multiple stories that unspool through time and across the globe.
Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.
Besides a surprising number of facial tattoos and scarring, these pictures give you a good feel for the cast, as well as the massive scope of the timeline and story. Images from the ancient past are juxtaposed with modern, or at least relatively modern times. Others look into the future as they span the globe from East to West.
