Transformers: Age of Extinction CinemaCon Footage Reveals Major Twist

With CinemaCon well underway and all the major movie studios and theater chains in Las Vegas to showoff their latest and greatest, Paramount Pictures has definitely put Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers: Age of Extinction. Paramount screened footage of the next Transformers film for press and exhibitors during CinemaCon and io9’s Meredith Woerner supplied a pretty entertaining rundown of they saw.

We get an introduction to Mark Wahlberg’s character, Cade Yaeger. He’s an inventor and single father, tasked with raising his leggy teenage daughter Tessa (Nicola Peltz) after the loss of her mother. The footage is described as “the most Michael Bay-iest movie ever.” This is a good thing if you’re a fan of his work (like I am), but if you’re not, it’s not likely this movie will convert you. Apparently Tessa is some sort of computer whiz and programmer, which I’m sure will come into play later on in the movie. The footage screened also shed some light on why the U.S. Government wants to hunt down all of the remaining Transformers after the events of Dark of the Moon. Woerner writes:
Here’s where things get interesting. The government agents pull out their very OWN Transformer, Galvatron. Back at the base there’s a younger agent who appears to be piloting Galvatron via joystick. Galvatron is their puppet! Optimus and the piloted Transformer spar, and Optimus is losing. BUT THEN a giant fucking spaceship comes out of the sky.
What?! So the U.S. Government created and control Galvatron in this movie?! I guess it would be hard to explain and conceive of a planet-sized Transformer like Unicron in a live-action movie. The footage also introduced another one of the film’s villains, Lockdown, who has been teased in the trailers and other promotional materials. It’s unclear, but it sounds like the Decepticons might be working for the Feds. Woerner continued:
Enter Lockdown, the Transformer whose face turns into a GIANT GUN, and he just starts blasting Optimus. Cade gets separated from his daughter and she and Optimus are caught in a robot net, which lifts them into the spaceship. Cade jumps onto the net and tries to hold on, but falls to the ground. In his sheer frustration, Cade slow-motion screams and PUNCHES THE GROUND.
The revelation that the U.S. Government created Galvatron is mind-blowing. We knew that humans were developing their own Transformers, based on the technology from the rubble of Chicago, but we had no idea that the big names like Galvatron would be associated with the human-made Transformers.
Woerner closes out her write-up with the idea that Age of Extinction could be the best movie in the series yet. It’s the biggest, features the most “Bayhem,” and also includes the series’ best cast with its new additions such as Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, and Jack Reynor. After all, Mark Wahlberg proclaimed that Age of Extinction is “bigger and better than the other three (films) combined. This will be the biggest movie of 2014.” That counts for something, right?
Transformers 4 takes place in Chicago, four years after the last film. The movie centers on Cade, an inventor, his teenage daughter Tessa, and her boyfriend Shane, as they “discover a buried Transformer which sets the stage for the return of the rest of the Transformers.”
The film also stars Stanley Tucci, Sophia Myles, T.J. Miller, Victoria Summer, Li Bingbing, Titus Welliver, Kelsey Grammer, and Peter Cullen, and opens everywhere on June 27, 2014, in 3D and IMAX.
