Transformers: Age Of Extinction Imports An International Trailer

If Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction doesn’t close out the summer as the highest grossing movie of the blockbuster season, a lot of people are going to be very surprised. And that’s regardless of whether or not it’s any good or whether or not critics savage it. Over time, the films have proven entirely immune to reviews and have raked in billions of dollars around the world. In that spirit, we have a new Japanese trailer, complete with a half-hearted sounding introduction from star Mark Wahlberg.
This video plays like a more stripped down, action packed version of the official American trailer. In large part this strips away all of the superfluous stuff—you know, like story and character—and show you what you came to see, giant robots fighting giant robots, and that’s okay with us. The movies have never been known as a bastion of stellar character work or for displays of acting chops. And you have to worry that Stanley Tucci is going to hurt that bit old robot’s feelings when he tells the Transformers that we, as humans, no longer need them.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about this trailer is the title. I actually stopped it and went back to make sure I heard what I thought I heard. And yes, apparently in Japan the movie will be known as Transformers: Lost Age, which, though it’s kind of generic, I like better than the American title, but then again, no one bothered to ask me.
I don’t have the highest hopes for this movie, I’ve never been a big fan of the franchise, but Dino-bots. I don’t even like the way they look in this movie, but I’d be lying if I said the idea of finally seeing Grimlock and company rendered on the big screen doesn’t give me a least a little bit of a stomach flutter. Some parts of my childhood just can’t be crushed, not even my Michael Bay.
The first installment in a new proposed trilogy, Age of Extinction tells the story of a down on his luck inventor and mechanic named Cade (Wahlberg). Set a few years after the destructive battle in Chicago, a time when Transformers have become vilified, while searching for scrap metal, Cade comes across the remnants of what used to be Autobot leader Optimus Prime, who he eventually revives. Though people oppose the presence of the giant shape-shifting robots, a series of events and new villains will drive home the point that they may be necessary to our continues survival.
Transformers: Age of Extinction opens in IMAX 3D on June 27.
