Star Saber? With only six months until it’s released, Transformers: Age of Extinction could be the crown jewel of the summer movie-going season in 2014. The first film in a new trilogy will introduce new Autobots and Decepticons, as well as a new cast of actors including Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, and Jack Reynor. Age of Extinction will also feature the Transformers sub-group the Dinobots and a new central villain in Cyclonus. Now a new image has surfaced that points to the addition of another new Transformer.

As reported on tfw2005.com, a new image of a prop Cybertronian sword/gun has emerged on the Internet. While it’s unclear who’s the owner of this Middle Earth-looking sword, it definitely resembles the Star Saber owned by Prima, the first Transformer at the creation of Cybertron. It looks like Age of Extinction‘s storyline might feature the reassembling of the Star Saber, the precursor to the Matrix of Leadership. While the first trilogy surrounded the Allspark, the new trilogy might center on the Star Saber.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION BELOW!

The Star Saber is a very powerful weapon in Transformers mythology. It has the power to “snuff out stars and crumble the stuff of planets into dust.” It was shattered into five pieces that one of the original 13 Transformers, Nexus Prime, along with Vector Prime and Alpha Trion, carved into five separate and new Transformers: Heatwave, Skyfall, Landquake, Topspin, and Breakaway, all of whom were later scattered across the Transformers multiverse.

According to leaked video footage, it is believed that Mark Wahlberg’s Cade comes into possession of one of these sword shards and that Optimus Prime and the Autobots have to protect him from the Decepticons, who want this ultimate weapon. If the Star Saber is featured in Age of Extinction, I can easily see the direction of the new film trilogy, which might lead up to a final showdown with Unicron. If that’s the case, then Paramount and the Transformers film series has an answer for their own cinematic universe, just like Marvel with the Infinity Gems and Thanos, or the X-Men with time travel and Apocalypse. Of course, take this speculation as just that… speculation.

Michael Bay recently clarified his earlier statements about the look and feel of Age of Extinction. While he said the new film would feel less goofy and more cinematic than the films in the first first trilogy, he doesn’t apologize for making the movies. The 48-year-old director also said audiences can get a first look at Age of Extinction during Super Bowl XLVIII in February 2014. A teaser trailer for the new Transformers movie will be made available shortly after the big game. It is believed that it will also be attached to screenings of the new RoboCop remake from director José Padilha.

Transformers: Age of Extinction follows an inventor named Cade, his teenaged daughter Tessa, and her boyfriend Shane, as they “discover a buried Transformer which sets the stage for the return of the rest of the Transformers.” The new film stars Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Stanley Tucci, Sophia Myles, T.J. Miller, Victoria Summer, Li Bingbing, Titus Welliver, and Kelsey Grammer.

Transformers: Age of Extinction hits theaters everywhere on June 27, 2014, in 3D and IMAX.
