Principal photography is well underway in Michigan on the latest film from director Michael Bay. Transformers 4 will kick-start a new Transformers trilogy that will be separate from the original trilogy. According to Bay, the next Transformers film will be a complete redesign of the old franchise. From everything we’ve seen of Transformers 4‘s Autobots and Decepticons, it definitely looks like a fresh start. Location photos and videos are slowly leaking onto the Internet, and the latest batch appears to reveal some sort of space ship.

Revealed in leaked videos that popped up on YouTube, the space ship looks too small to be an Autobot or Decepticon, so perhaps it’s a surveying ship or transport from a bigger ship. Regardless of its origins, it looks like Transformers 4 might go cosmic!

Throughout the course of the Transformers film series, Michael Bay has only taken us into space twice. Once at the very beginning of the first Transformers in 2007, and again for an extended period at the very beginning of Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 2011. Aside from that, all of the action in the franchise has happened on Earth. If Transformers 4 does take us into space in a major way, there’s a good chance that we’re going to see the epic civil war between the Autobots and Decepticons on the planet Cybertron, which was teased at the beginning of the third Transformers movie. Honestly, who goes to a Transformers movie for the humans? I want to watch a Transformers movie that takes place on Cybertron!

The designs of the Autobots and Decepticons have changed greatly for Transformers 4, with new looks for Optimus Prime, Side Swipe, and Bumblebee. There have been some new additions to the cast as well, such as Autobots Hound, Drift, and a car version of Slingshot (traditionally a jet plane). On the Decepticon side, we’ve seen a Freightliner truck that many speculate is Motormaster. The identities of a mysterious (and expensive) Pagani Huayra and Sonic RS Rally Car have yet to be revealed.

Most of the new vehicles featured in Transformers 4 are brand-new additions to the Transformers film series. Last year, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner explained that, despite a humongous $1.1 billion (yes, billion with a “B”) box office gross, Transformers: Dark of the Moon was a disappointment to the multinational toy and board game company. With toy sales drastically falling for the first time for the Transformers toy line, Hasbro felt that Transformers 4 needed to have new Autobots and Decepticons to boost middling toy sales. The point of these Transformers movies is to sell more toys and merchandise, right?

Director Michael Bay says that Transformers 4 will take place four years after the events of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. There have also been rumors that Transformers 4 could introduce fan-favorite villain Unicron into the film franchise. Aside from that, there is little else known about the film’s plot.

The fourth installment in the Transformers series will also feature actors Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Brenton Thwaites, Jack Reynor, Stanley Tucci, Sophia Myles, T.J. Miller, and Kelsey Grammer as the film’s human villain.

Transformers 4 will hit theaters everywhere on June 27, 2014, in 3D and IMAX.
