Following his Academy Award-winning career as director Christopher Nolan’s long-time collaborator, former cinematographer Wally Pfister is taking his own shot at directing with the upcoming science fiction film, Transcendence. British actor Rebecca Hall was recently cast in the mad scientist film, joining Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany on what is surely to be a strange journey.
According to Deadline, Rebecca Hall beat out Rooney Mara and Emily Blunt for the role of Johnny Depp’s widowed wife. There is still not much known about Transcendence, but the science fiction film will follow a group of scientists who try to meld human intelligence with computer technology. After one of the scientists is gunned down, his colleagues try to upload his brain into a supercomputer.
This isn’t the first time Rebecca Hall has worked with Wally Pfister. She appeared in Christopher Nolan’s 2006 film The Prestige, where she played Sarah Borden, the wife of Christian Bale’s character, magician Alfred Borden. Hall received a Golden Globe nomination for her supporting role in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2008 and The Town starring Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner in 2010. She will also play the character of Maya Hansen in the upcoming Iron Man 3 later this year.
Transcendence is slated to start principal photography this April, for its 2014 release date. Last week, Johnny Depp was confirmed to star in the sci-fi film and Paul Bettany was added to the cast to play Depp’s character’s colleague. Jack Paglen wrote the screenplay, which is also his feature film debut, and Christopher Nolan and his producing partner Emma Thomas will work on Transcendence as the film’s executive producers.
Transcendence will hit theaters everywhere on April 25, 2014.
