With a PG-13 adaptation of Robert Heinlan’s pulp sci-fi classic Starship Troopers in the works, fans of Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 version may have to satisfy themselves with the animated sequel Starship Troopers: Invasion. Executive produced by Troopers star Casper Van Dien, the CGI adventure is written by Ed Neumeier, who wrote Verhoeven’s film, and directed by Appleseed helmer Shinji Aramaki. A new trailer for Invasion has arrived, preceding the Blu-ray/DVD release, which is scheduled for August 28th.
Starship Troopers: Invasion reunites the three central characters from Verhoeven’s film: Johnny Rico, Carmen Ibanez, and Carl Jenkins (played by Van Dien, Denise Richards, and Neil Patrick Harris, respectively). Two groups of the Mobile Infantry converge on the remote Federation outpost Fort Casey to fend off a bug attack. After Carl, now with the Ministry of Paranormal Warfare, commandeers one of the vessels for a covert mission, only to disappear, Johnny and Carmen must rush to his rescue.
While this story sounds like a concept you’d be interested in, and the trailer promises lots of bug-slaughtering action, the animation seems like the weak link here. From this video it doesn’t look like technology has progressed beyond Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within more than a decade ago.
All doubts aside, you do get to hear Johnny Rico yell his signature line that he lifted from Michael Ironside, “C’mon you apes, you wanna live forever?” That alone might make Starship Troopers: Invasion worth watching.
