If the Assassin’s Creed games have taught me anything, other than that it’s a blast to climb around Renaissance-era architecture, it’s that Leonardo Da Vinci makes an excellent wingman. I don’t mean that he’s good at helping you score phone numbers, since those hadn’t been invented yet. I mean if you needed somebody to build you a set of wings, he was your man. Da Vinci’s crazy, ahead-of-their-time inventions included designs for a flying machine, a parachute, a machine gun, and even a friggin’ tank. Needless to say, Da Vinci’s life is chock full of narrative potential, and Starz is looking to mine that potential with their upcoming series, Da Vinci’s Demons. Today they’ve released the first full trailer for the series, and you can check it out below.

Created by Man of Steel co-writer David S. Goyer, Da Vinci’s Demons mixes the historical Da Vinci with what looks to be a generous helping of conspiracy and intrigue. And, this being the network that brought us Spartacus: Blood and Sand, no shortage of naked people and boot-knockery. We’ve still got many months before we’ll get to check the series out first-hand, but I’m hoping Starz will continue its solid run of original programming. Going back to my intro, I’ve got my fingers crossed that the show will serve up the same mix of Da Vinci’s real life and all manner of fantastic, possibly retro-science fictional, elements. The show I keep envisioning in my head is Rambaldi: The Series.

Come to think of it, Da Vinci might be helpful for getting you phone numbers after all. He’d just have to invent the phone first.
