This Could Be Our First Look At Tom Hardy As Mad Max In Fury Road

A few days ago, director George Miller could finally utter the words many of us thought he’d never get to say: “Mad Max 4 is finally finished shooting.” The film still doesn’t have a release date, so it might be a while yet before we can see if the 28-year-long wait between movies was worth it. For now, we can check out a new image that has popped up online, purportedly of Tom Hardy in the role of “Mad” Max Rockatansky.

The image is a signed photo of Tom Hardy, apparently in costume for Mad Max: Fury Road, although there’s no official confirmation of that at this point. In the film Hardy is starring as a younger version of the character originally played by Australian actor Mel Gibson. While we’ll have to label this as speculation until somebody in the movie’s camp says yea or nay to its authenticity, it certainly fits with the look and style of the Max Max films, but who knows, maybe this is how Tom Hardy dresses on his days off.

Mad Max: Fury Road will follow the events that led up to the first film. Here’s the official synopsis:

Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived.

Tom Hardy is joined in Fury Road by Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Zoë Kravitz, and Abbey Lee. The film has been in development hell since the release of the third movie in the Mad Max series, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, way back in 1985. But even after the film finally found its footing, the production was plagued by re-shoots,  production delays, and re-locations. Even though Mad Max: Fury Road has finished shooting, we still don’t know when it will arrive in theaters.

Although Mel Gibson will not play Mad Max, it is rumored that he might make a cameo in the film.
