While Tom Hanks has chalked up quite an impressive resume over his three decades or so of professional acting, he’s not someone you generally associate with science fiction. That’s kind of surprising considering his involvement with projects such as Apollo 13 and From the Earth to the Moon proves that space exploration is an interest of his. Next week Hanks will be dipping a toe into science fiction, but not in the way you might expect. He’s both writing and performing in Electric City, a 12-part animated web series that launches next Tuesday, July 17th, on Yahoo.com.

That new shot from Electric City popped over on Ain’t It Cool News, and shows off a little of the visual style of the series. In addition to Hanks voicing the lead, the dystopian series features the voices of Jeanne Tripplehorn, Holland Taylor, Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Antoon, Chris Parnell, and Paul Scheer. The show is described as “a view of the future of civilization, presented through the lens of provocative themes such as energy consumption, freedom of information, crime and punishment.” I know: because when I think “dystopian,” I immediately think “Tom Hanks.”

You can find out more about Electric City, and participate in interactive tie-in games, over at the official website.
