Was TMNT’s Master Splinter A Cult Leader?

Cult leaders are usually thought of as stern, charismatic, and abusive. With those characteristics in consideration, would Master Splinter from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles be considered a cult leader? He’s much older than the Turtles. He taught them martial arts and gave them weapons to do his bidding. And he “imprisoned” them to live underground in the New York City sewer system. Cracked.com makes a convincing argument to re-think the intentions of the TMNT rat leader Master Splinter. Check out the video below:

In “Today’s Topics” — a weekly pop culture discussion/argument video series — the Cracked.com team argues the merits of whether or not Master Splinter was a cult leader. Obviously, this is a tongue-in-cheek look at TMNT’smutated rodent father-figure, but it does raise some interesting questions about why Master Splinter and Shredder turned to recruiting children for their secret armies. This could possibly be a better angle than the plot synopsis of Michael Bay’s reboot/re-imagining of TMNT. If the Platinum Dunes production team wants to take a more serious and gritty look at TMNT then they should probably take this video into consideration. Taking this cult leader concept and pairing it with Mike Sekowski’s amazing artwork could benefit a grittier version of TMNT. It already sounds better than space alien ninja turtles and the corny teen romance angle the leaked scriptsuggests. The new and not-so-improved Ninja Turtles will not be released until March 2014 so this should give Michael Bay and his team enough time to deliver something TMNT fans will find worthwhile. Otherwise, we can just add the new Ninja Turtles project on the large heap of failed and watered-down projects from Platinum Dunes including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th. Have you no shame, Michael Bay?
