Terminator GenisysAs excited as I am about the prospect of a new Terminator movie, I’ve approached Terminator: Genisys with a cautious air so far. We’ve heard reports where people involved with the film call it the nail in the coffin for the franchise, and some of the potential plot details do sound a bit strange. However, the most recent things we’ve seen look incredibly promising, like that awesome picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 looking like all haggard, and parts of that trailer are phenomenal. And keeping with shit that will get you pumped for this movie, Paramount Pictures released this new image that should do the trick.

As terrifying as they are covered in skin, the T-800s have always been even scarier when it’s just the metal skeleton. There’s something so sinister about their design, and those creepy glowing red eyes don’t help matters. What you see in this picture from USA Today definitely makes you remember the chill that ran up your spine the first time you laid eyes on one of these gleaming chrome devils.

Genisys opens in the future, in the year 2029, where the Future War rages and the group of human resistors, led by John Connor (Jason Clarke, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), have Skynet’s forces backed into a corner. Like in James Cameron’s 1984 original, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney, Divergent) is a loyal soldier, raised in the post-apocalyptic wastes of California, and Connor sends him back in time to protect his mother, Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones). But what he finds isn’t what he expects. Instead of the meek, frightened Sarah of the first film, there have been so many attempts on her life that the timeline has changed drastically, and now she’s a total badass. We’ll leave it at that as not to spoil anything.

Check out the trailer below.

A kind of soft reboot, Genisys is set in the same world as the other films, but essentially rewrites history to the point where it’s like starting over. Assuming it’s successful, this is the first of three planned films that Paramount wants to produce. The next two will, if things go according to plan, shoot back-to-back and drop sometime in 2017 and 2018. Part of the reason for that is because in 2019 the rights to the property revert back to Cameron’s control and the studio would like to squeeze as much money out of this as possible.

Like I said, I started off skeptical, but at some point I threw up my hands and yelled, “What the hell?” and now I’m just along for the ride. The closer we come to this, the more excited I get. I can’t help it, the thought of killer robots from the future just puts a smile on my face every time.

Terminator: Genisys opens everywhere July 1, 2015.
