TMNT in actionWith the New York Toy Fair coming up in a few weeks, toy manufacturers are getting ready to show off the latest and greatest from this year’s toy line. It’s also the best way to get a sneak peek at upcoming genre movies through their toys and action figures. It’s likely that we’re going to see something new from Guardians of the Galaxy (hopefully Star-Lord’s Ship), Transformers: Age of Extinction, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but for now an image of three of the four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has emerged to give fans a better look at the new design for the Heroes in a Half Shell.

The new image of the TMNT action figures surfaced on BigShinyRobot and line up with the recent leaked banner art and concept renderings of the reboot. The action figures are actually a good mix between classic TMNT silliness and something more updated. The Turtles actually look ugly and not cute, but also pretty badass. The designers enhanced the Turtles so that more of their personalities are shining through their overall look.

Michelangelo looks like a surfer dude, but if the art department wanted to update this look they should’ve gone for a New York hipster look instead. Donatello looks high tech, with multiple gadgets attached to his shell, which looks kind of cheesy. Raphael looks tough like an MMA fighter, and a bit more bulky than his Turtle brothers. Sadly, Leonardo is MIA.

The toys also jibe with the toy descriptions that were leaked a few weeks ago. It seems that the posting was correct, with an exact description of the image above. The description even gets Michelangelo’s sneakers correct, with his Turtle toes poking out of his shoes. It’s also likely that the outlet’s descriptions of the Shredder and Master Splinter are correct.

  • Donatello’s gear is a mix of techy, modern and a dash of samurai with more normal footwear (for a 2 toed giant turtle), some gadget on his head and gadgetry coming off of his shell. The ends of his mask are far longer than the rest, draping down to his waist.
  • Raphael has adopted an urban warrior look with white, bandage-like wrappings on his feet, right leg, and right arm. He wears this very conan-esque loin cloth..thing..with leather straps draping down as if he were more suited for gladiatorial battle.
  • Michelangelo’s outfit seems the simplest with a hoodie wrapped around his waist, pants and sneakers with the toes cut out, wrappings on his hands and forearms, a necklace (could be puka shell beads?) and his mask ends drape down to his chest. He looks frighteningly ready to spit out some modern catch phrases.

There are no official plot details available for TMNT at this point, but it seems likely that it will feature the Turtles, Splinter, and the Shredder’s origin stories. According to TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman, the movie will be a mix between The Avengers and The Raid: Redemption, so it’s going to be interesting to see how this movie turns out because this sounds amazing!

The reboot stars Megan Fox, Danny Woodburn, Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard, Noel Fisher, Will Arnett, Whoopi Goldberg, and William Fichtner as the whitewashed Shredder. Josh Appelbaum & André Nemec (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) wrote the script, while Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) directed the remake.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hits theaters everywhere on August 8.
