It looks like the movie gods really don’t want Ghostbusters 3 to happen. Sony is currently re-assessing their main slate of films due to enormous financial troubles. Among those projects is the fate of Ghostbusters 3, and Sony will not make a decision on the project until the end of March 2013.

According to THR, Sony has halted all work with their upcoming projects until the end of their fiscal year. Ghostbusters 3 was rumored to start production during the summer of 2013, but now the third installment in the series could start production during the fall of 2013 at the earliest. At the moment, there’s no telling if Sony will give Ghostbusters 3 the green light or when the film will finally be delivered in theaters.

Ghostbusters 3 is no stranger to production delays and speculation. Rumors about a third Ghostbusters film have been flying since the release of Ghostbusters 2 in 1989. For the longest time, Dan Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman seemed to be the only ones who wanted to make Ghostbusters 3. There were at least a few weeks when it seemed like Ghostbusters 3 was on the right track, but despite constant re-writes, casting issues with Bill Murray, and scheduling problems with the filmmakers, it looked like Ghostbusters 3 was really going to happen. Now the project is back in the same limbo it was for years.

At this point, Ghostbusters 3 has to be better than the original Ghostbusters to live up to all of the rumors and speculation surrounding the project. Maybe Aykroyd and Reitman should put their energy into another project. It just feels like Ghostbusters 3 will be more like The Phantom Menace or Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull than anything worth all the time and effort put behind it.
