“To ignite a Rebellion, all it takes is a single spark.” With Star Wars: Rebels debuting this fall, Disney and Lucasfilm are slowly introducing the new animated series to Star Wars fans. We’ve already met the characters Ezra, Kanan, and Chopper, and now we’re getting a look at the first TV promos featuring those characters in action.
The TV spots not only feature Ezra and his trusty slingshot, but also a modified version of the Rebel Alliance’s logo. It almost looks like a mix between the logo we know and love and the Mockingjay logo from The Hunger Games. It’s good to see that Rebels will be a new series with new characters and setting, but at the same time, it’s good that it also feels very familiar and comforting. While the TV spots don’t feature a premiere date for the animated series, it’s really exciting to see more footage from Star Wars: Rebels.
One of the spots is based on the planet Lothal, while the other takes the adventure to outer space with Kanan, Chopper, and the Ghost spaceship. We also get a glimpse of a new character that Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to introduce. She looks like Hera Syndulla, the Twi’lek co-pilot of the Ghost, who is also believed to be the daughter of Cham Syndulla, the Twi’lek freedom fighters from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Details about Hera Syndulla were leaked through a new Star Wars: Rebels LEGO set a few weeks ago.
Meanwhile, the New York Toy Fair has been a great source of what we should expect from our favorite upcoming science fiction movies and TV shows such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Guardians of the Galaxy, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Age of Extinction. Recently, we’ve been seeing a lot of new toys coming out for the upcoming animated series. Along with a few early sneak previews and leaks, we’re getting a lot of new images from Hasbro at the New York Toy Fair.
The glut of images above from Collider and io9 feature Kanan, Erza, and a new character who is believed to be Zeb Orrelios, the pilot of the Phantom spaceship. We also get to see the new designs for Stormtroopers and Imperial officers, with new Stormtrooper-esque helmets. There’s also a mysterious female Mandalorian who has yet to be identified. The good news is that Hasbro is offering the Inquisitor’s red, double-edged lightsaber as a new full-sized toy, so we have that to look forward to this year.
Rebels takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, a few years before the start of Episode IV. The Galactic Empire is taking over planets in the Outer Rim, and a band of teenage renegades start to sabotage the Imperial stranglehold on the planet Lothal. They do anything they undermine the new Emperor’s power and form the very early stages of what will become the Rebel Alliance.
Star Wars: Rebels will air sometime in October 2014. It will premiere on the Disney Channel, and then move to Disney XD.
