Happy Star Wars Day, everybody. Lately we’ve all been a bit preoccupied by the last week’s big casting announcement for Star Wars: Episode VII. But that’s not the only return to the franchise that’s looming on the horizon. In honor of this most festive occasion, Disney and Lucasfilm have taken the opportunity to unveil the first full trailer for their upcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels. We also have news that the show will feature a familiar face from the original trilogy.

I’ve been skeptical of Rebels. The rational part of me knows that it’s aimed at a younger audience, but it looked too kid-centric to get me very interested. However, this trailer, and the teaser that hit the other day, may have changed my mind. This footage actually makes the show feel like a part of Star Wars.

The set up of the series definitely follows a familiar pattern. There is the mentor, a rogue Jedi named Kanan; Ezra Bridger, a hotshot kid who is a petty thief as well as a con artist; Hera Syndulla, the daredevil pilot of a ship called the Ghost; a big, weird looking tough guy, Zeb; and Chopper, the spunky little astromech with attitude for days. The wildcard in the group may be Sabine, the Mandalorian explosives and weapons expert. Either way, it’s quite a team.

Rebels takes place after the events of Revenge of the Sith and five years before we meet Luke Skywalker and company in A New Hope, and shows the beginnings of what becomes the Rebel Alliance. As the Galactic Empire tightens its oppressive hold on the galaxy, this crew of insurgents is one of the few willing to take a stand against their overlords. This trailer also has everything you want out of Star Wars, there are blasters, chase scenes, stormtroopers, star destroyers, and perhaps most important, lightsabers.

Right at the very end of this video, that bit with the Inquisitor doesn’t fit in particularly well and feels kind of tacked on. You get the impulse, he’s the Empire’s main Jedi hunter, and the shows primary antagonist, so you want to introduce him. This, however, leads into the second big piece of news of the day, though he doesn’t appear in this trailer, Obi-Wan Kenobi will show up at some point in Star Wars Rebels.

Jedi News came across this tidbit at a toy event where they caught a glimpse a Rebels-specific action figure of the venerable Jedi. There’s no word on how big a role he’ll have in the series, but it’s cool to know that he’ll be a part of the action. So it seems that even in exile on Tattooine he still manages to keep his fingers on the pulse of the rebellion.

Star Wars Rebels is scheduled to premiere this October with an hour long special on the Disney Channel before it takes up its regular residence on Disney XD.
