Star Wars: The Force Awakens As Directed By Wes Anderson

J.J. Abrams is a filmmaker with a distinct visual style. That bit near the end of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer where the Millennium Falcon soars around, battling TIE Fighters, with the camera chasing it the whole way, has his fingerprints all over it. Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom) is another director with a definite, though drastically different, signature aesthetic. While he’s responsible for twee comedic dramas, he’s never worked even remotely in science fiction, someone wondered what it would be like if he was responsible for the next installment of the Star Wars franchise, and the result is this video.
Jonah Feingold posted this video on YouTube, and it’s really a dead on filtering of The Force Awakens trailer through Anderson’s unique lens and sensibilities. Everything from the framing, the quick zooms, and character names like Space Girl and A Hooded Ruffian, are touches that could come directly from many of Anderson’s films, especially his last few. Then there’s the choice of a bubbly French pop song in lieu of John Williams’ score, and that letter from a father, who just so happens to be a stormtrooper, to his daughter. This is, of course, far from the only video floating around out there that has taken liberties and put its own stamp on The Force Awakens trailer. In the days immediately following the release it inspire not one…
…but two Lego trailers, and possibly more out there that we just don’t know about. People are having a pretty good time with this one in internet land, and delivering some really fun, creative offerings.
And just in case you forgot how awesome the original trailer is, here we go one more time, just for the hell of it. It’s worth the risk of taking a minute-and-a-half break from your workday. Hell, you know your boss has already done this a couple times today.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens everywhere on December 18, 2015, but you probably already knew that and have the date circled on your calendar and a reminder or two set on your smart phone.
