Digital Extremes’ upcoming Star Trek videogame gives players an opportunity that could be great fun. You can choose to play as one Captain James Tiberius Kirk, or opt to take over the role of his logic-minded Vulcan compatriot, Mister Spock. Paramount Digital Entertainment and Namco Bandai Games have released an action-packed new trailer for the game. While I’m not a huge gamer, this trailer certainly makes it look pretty badass, and it also gives a glimpse of a species long-time fans will recognize: the reptilian Gorn.
The new Star Trek game is set in the revamped world of J.J. Abrams’ films and takes place between them, hence Kirk looks like Chris Pine and Spock resembles Zachary Quinto. Gameplay also appears as fast-paced as Abrams’ films. Expect a great many more explosions than in the Original Series.
When Kirk and Spock team up they have to work together in order to stop a notorious enemy race from taking over the galaxy and wrecking up the joint. That “notorious enemy” was confirmed a while back as the reptilian Gorn, best known for trying to squish Captain Kirk in the Original Series episode “Arena.” You can see some screenshots and concept art from the game in the gallery below.
The game comes complete with an original stand-alone story from award winning God of War scribe Marianne Krawczyk. A collaboration between Krawczyk and the writers and producers of the new Trek films, Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof, Ontario’s Digital Extremes (Bioshock) is developing the project.
Star Trek will be available for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC. You should look for a release sometime in the first quarter of 2013.
