EncounterAtFairpoint1It’s a rough time to be a long-time Star Trek fan. For many who cut their teeth on the original movies and the various TV incarnations over the years, J.J. Abrams’ rebooted movie universe is at best a pale imitation and at worst an outright insult (to be fair, the critics generally don’t agree with that sentiment). So if you’re a die-hard Trekker longing for the good old days, it might be time to click over to Amazon, because they’ve got a great deal going on for Blu-ray copies of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s first five seasons.

The Star Trek season sets have typically been a bit pricy, with the Next Gen Blu-rays listing for a whopping $129.99. That’s enough to put a dent in a man’s wallet even if you’re from a future that doesn’t use money. Thankfully Amazon has just given you a reason to raid the savings account, as all five Next Gen Blu-ray sets are going for a mere $45.99 today — that’s 65% off MSRP, and it means you can get all five sets for a little over $200. Not cheap, but certainly a lot cheaper than you could otherwise get your hands on new copies.

Moreover, these are the remastered versions of the episodes, with the show’s somewhat dated visual effects having gotten a digital spit-polish just like the earlier Original Series Blu-rays. They’re also pretty jam-packed with bonus features, so you’re getting a solid return on your hard-earned cash. (In the interest of full disclosure, there have been problems with some of the Blu-ray sets, so take that into consideration before you make a purchase.)

If you’re a Firefly/Serenity fan, there’s a good chance you were thrilled at the announcement of Dark Horse’s Serenity: Leaves on the Wind comic book. The in-canon series picks up after the events of the Serenity movie and follows the further adventures of Malcolm Reynolds and company. Needless to say, the movie took a brutal toll on the crew of the Serenity, and even their seeming PR victory over the Alliance has only made life worse for them, with Mal and the rest being hunted even more ruthlessly than before.

But Leaves on the Wind wasn’t the first foray into comics for Firefly, and now you can play catch-up on that earlier material courtesy of another Amazon deal of the day. You can get Kindle editions of Serenity, Vol. 1: Those Left Behind and Serenity, Vol. 2: Better Days for six bucks a pop. They collects the titular comics miniseries, which is set between the show and the movie. Better Days days collects the second Firefly miniseries as well as several one-shot comics and short stories.
