A few days ago we learned that the next Star Trek movie was targeting 2013 for a potential release, and in order to be ready for it, director JJ Abrams and his team are no doubt prepping to begin filming in the next few months. In fact according to a rumor published on Trek Movie they are scheduled to being shooting on January 15, 2012. The entire cast and crew from the 2009 film is expected to be back.
Here’s the fly in the ointment. Though they’ve been in pre-production on the movie for the past couple of months, it sounds like they still don’t have a completely finished script. Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof did finish it and submit it to the studio, but part of the start date rumor includes the notion that they’re working on another draft which “fits into the budget the Paramount has set.” I’d like to think that means Paramount gave them more money than they expected, so they’re adding more space battles or something, but the reverse is far more likely.
For now word is that Abrams and his team are out scouting locations, in particular they’ve been scouting out Hawaii to use as a possible “jungle planet”. Other potential locations include a Los Angeles museum as a stand-in for a famous Trek location (Starfleet HQ?) and of course stages on the Paramount Pictures lot.
