This past weekend, audiences throughout the country were treated to either the first nine minutes or the first full trailer of Star Trek Into Darkness before screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Now the first full trailer is available online for your viewing convenience, and if you didn’t want to pay to watch The Hobbit. The trailer packs a punch and places the sci-fi series in a bleaker setting as the film’s title suggests. It is literally Star Trek Into Darkness. Check out the full trailer below.

While the American trailer is more action packed, the International Japanese trailer has more of an emotional weight to it. The American trailer does have a sorrowful tone, which is why Star Trek Into Darkness is poised to be The Dark Knight or The Empire Strikes Back of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek film series. It also spells out certain doom for the crew of the Starship Enterprise as the film’s villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch promises more unsafe and destructive days ahead.

Of course, the trailer does a good job teasing the identity of Star Trek Into Darkness’ villain, while at the same time delivering the idea of his “wrath” and his “supernatural power.” Is Cumberbatch playing Khan or Gary Mitchell or is his character name “John Harrison,” an amalgam of both? We will surely find out this summer.

Star Trek Into Darkness will follow the crew of the Enterprise returning home to find an unstoppable force of terror from within Starfleet ranks. He promises to destroy everything Starfleet stands for, while Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew try to stop him at any cost.

Star Trek Into Darkness opens in theaters everywhere on May 17th 2013 in IMAX 3D.
