Next we get to see the end of the alternate Klingon footage. Here Kirk and company have fought the Klingons — and lost. In fact, Kirk’s about to get one to the dome before Khan finally shows up with his big-ass gun. You can see that much of this footage was never finished, so you can see the bluescreens in the background, forlornly waiting for somebody to drop in the appropriate alien hellscape.

One of the many crimes Into Darkness critics laid at the film’s feet was the arbitrary whitewashing of Khan Noonien Singh into a pasty British dude. That wasn’t the only noteworthy but previously unexplained tweak, however. Carl Marcus, originally played by Bibi Besch in The Wrath of Khan, also gets a British makeover in the young version played in Into Darkness by Alice Eve. The real-life reason for the change is probably that “she didn’t want to do an American accent” or “J.J. Abrams just liked her better that way.” But here we get the official explanation for the discrepancy in the new timeline.
