Space Pirate Captain Harlock Theatrical Trailer Will Run You Down

Anime fans worldwide are super pumped for the release of Shinji Aramaki’s (Appleseed) adaptation of Space Pirate Captain Harlock. A Japanese release should be coming down the pipe before too long, and this new theatrical trailer does look pretty damn rad. And that’s taking into account the dreadful, dreadful pop song that plays over the latter part of the video. Seriously, it’s one of the worst things you’ll ever hear.

We’ve already seen a couple of trailers, but this one takes the cake.

I’m not usually a fan of this kind of animation, but the CGI from Square Enix actually looks good, and less like a video game than you usually expect from this sort of thing. The moment when Captain Harlock steers his ship, the Arcadia — that big, black beast with a giant silver skull on the front that looks like a space version of Elvira’s car — into that other ship is awesome. That’s what you can do when you pilot a Death Shadow Class battle cruiser. You may worry that there will be a little too much melodrama — again, that song — but hopefully the film will skew more towards the epic space battle side of the coin, especially if that ship with the crazy crossed guns plays a significant role in the proceedings.

Based on a Manga by Leiji Matsumoto, Space Pirate Captain Harlock has already been adapted a couple of times. The story takes place in the year 2977, after the devastating Homecoming War, when the Gaia Corporation rules the galaxy. It’s never a good sign when a company is in overt control. At least make them pretend. Captain Harlock and his crew are now the only hope humanity has left to return home.

Space Pirate Captain Harlock should be released in Japan this fall, and hopefully the rest of the world will see it sometime soon.
