One of the great benefits of Kickstarter as a fundraising tool is that it can let filmmakers slowly reach their goals by way of little donations here and there. So it’s surprising when a project reaches and exceeds its goals at an accelerated rate, as recently happened with Space Command. Space Command’s Kickstarter campaign only went live on May 16, but it has already raised more than $100,000 from more than 1,000 contributors – far surpassing the project’s initial $75,000 goal.
According to the Space Commander campaign, this makes it the fastest film ever funded on Kickstarter. Whether or not that’s true, it is pretty impressive that the project was able to meet its initial goal of $75,000 in only 3 days. Most of the pledges fall in the $60-$250 range, where thank you gifts include items like signed DVD sets, special t-shirts, downloadable Space Command badges and ID cards, e-books, and trading cards. There are a few donations at the $10,000 level, too. At those upper levels, pledgers can choose from a 2-day class with the filmmakers and co-producer credit, a speaking role in the film and private lunch with the filmmakers, and one of the laser canons used in the film.
If you want to get in on backing Space Command, you’ve still got plenty of time. The project will be live on Kickstarter until Saturday, July 14, 11:59PM EDT. The minimum pledge is only $1, but you won’t start seeing any rewards until you promise to give $5.
