We’re only a couple of weeks away from Christmas, and for many of us that means planning family gatherings, finishing up the holiday shopping, and building a bunker in case we’re invaded by a horde of murderous snowmen. Okay, you may not have experienced that one, but you can see how the Doctor will handle that very scenario when the Doctor Who Christmas special — entitled “The Snowmen” — airs on Christmas day, both in the U.K. and the U.S. The lovely folks at the BBC have released a trailer for the special, and it has all the ingredients to be a perfect Christmas gift for dedicated Whovians: an alien menace, a chilly Victorian setting, a fairy tale feel, a brand-new companion, and the soothing voice of Sir Ian McKellen (he’s voicing the Snowmen). Check it out!

It seems new companion Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman) moves fast and offers no apologies. Not only does she switch the traditional roles with The Doctor — “No no, I do the hand-grabbing! That’s always me!” — it also looks like she’s planting a smooch on the time lord in her first episode out the gate. It’s definitely a different chemistry than how The Doctor related to Amy and Rory. From the looks of things he may be the one trying to keep up with her, which should make for a nice change of pace. After all, as the Christmas special begins he’s still moping around being sad about the loss of the Ponds, so he could use somebody to drag him back out of his shell. Or into his time-traveling police box, whatever the case may be.

Here’s the official synopsis for “The Snowmen.”

Christmas Eve 1892 and the falling snow is the stuff of fairy-tales. When the fairy-tale becomes a nightmare and a chilling menace threatens Earth, an unorthodox young governess, Clara, calls on the Doctor for help. But the Doctor is in mourning, reclusive and determined not to engage in the problems of the universe. As old friends return, will the Doctor really abandon humankind or will he fight to save the world – and Christmas – from the icy clutches of this mysterious menace.
