Slick Concept Art From RoboCop Remake

And possibly a look at ED-209.

A lot of people are down on the look of the suit in the upcoming RoboCop remake. Many fans of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 original just don’t dig the new black look. While not a huge fan—to my eyes it looks like a robotic Venom costume—I’m going to try to reserve judgment until we finally see it in action.

A new collection of concept art (there was also a sizzle reel with some CG film, and interviews with director Jose Padilha and star Joel Kinnaman, but that has since been pulled) has appeared, and shows some of the original ideas they came up with for the suit.

Initially the costume looked much more like the suit in the original RoboCop. The skin was silver, and while there were minor tweaks and updates, the overall appearance was very similar. You also get few glimpses of the weapons RoboCop will use to kick the ass of crime.

Perhaps the coolest part of these images are the looks you get at the set design. They give you a good feel for what the world will look like in the final movie. If these are to be believed, there will be a quite a scope of settings. Set in 2028, there is a discrepancy between the well-off, high-tech part of society and the impoverished, gritty side of things. At least a part of this contrast will manifest on screen in the settings. Slick, futuristic interiors, most likely office buildings and scientific facilities, will appear alongside the rough urban streets of Detroit. This is where RoboCop will shoot it out with violent underground outlaws (including a guy with a rocket launcher, apparently), while he’ll have to combat a different sort of criminal element within the confines of the modern skyscrapers.
