Appearances: “They Saved Lisa’s Brain” (1999), “Gump Roast” (2002), “Don’t Fear the Roofer” (2005), “Stop or My Dog Will Shoot!” (2007)

The fact that Hawking has been on the show so many times had somehow eluded me, but I’ll make my excuse the fact that some of them probably occurred after I bailed on the show (can’t recall which year that was). At any rate, Hawking passes George Takei with four appearances on The Simpsons — five if you count reused footage in the 2000 episode “Behind the Laughter.” Unlike George each time he was playing himself. In “They Saved Lisa’s Brain,” Lisa is invited to join professional smart-people organization MENSA and Hawking turns up to give her some handy advice. In addition to his later Simpsons appearances, he’s also turned up twice in Matt Groening’s Futurama: in 2000’s “Anthology of Interest I” and in the 2008 straight-to-DVD flick The Beast with a Billion Backs.

Moe: So who’s paying?

Homer (using a robotic voice with his hand over his mouth): I-am.

Hawking: Hey, I didn’t say that.

Homer: Yes-I-did.
