Gary King! You know what sounds like the best time ever, watching Simon Pegg hang out with guys from Monty Python. And you know what else? We’re going to get to see that happen in the not too distant future. Pegg has signed on to star in the science fiction comedy Absolutely Anything from Python alum Terry Jones.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Shaun of the Dead star won’t just be working with Jones, most of the other surviving Python crew is coming along for the ride, too. John Cleese, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam are all on board, and there’s another name you’ll recognize, Robin Williams. That’s right, Mork from Ork is in this, too.

Absolutely Anything will star Pegg as a schoolteacher, disillusioned by his life, who one day discovers he has magical powers. How did he come by these new abilities, you might ask? Well they were given to him by a bunch of space aliens who abduct him, of course. These extraterrestrial visitors will sound suspiciously like the former Monty Python cast members, because, well, that’s who will voice the little buggers. For his part, Williams will provide the voice of the hero’s faithful canine companion.

As both a general funny man, and a Brit, you can understand how psyched Pegg is at the prospect of Absolutely Anything. This has to be something of a dream come true for any comedian. He said, “As someone whose love of comedy was hugely informed by Monty Python, the chance to work with Terry [Jones] was a gift. Meeting your heroes is one thing. Working with them is something else.” You have to imagine there was a great deal of giggling, clapping, and happy awkward dancing when he heard the news. There certainly was on our end.

Jones says Pegg is “absolutely perfect” for the role, and it certainly sounds right up his alley. He’s great at playing the normal, everyday good guy who finds himself completely out of his depth. His good-natured charm is sure to be on full display as he palls around with a bunch of hilarious alien creatures.

Producer Ben Timlett says:

We are extremely excited that Terry Jones’ and Gavin Scott’s script will soon be brought to life. Their collaboration has created a laugh-out-loud storyline, wonderfully quirky characters and dialogue that not everyone will be expecting.

Absolutely Anything is currently working to round out the cast, but with names like this involved, you can’t imagine they’ll have too difficult a time filling out the roster. Pre-production is scheduled to begin this February, with filming supposedly taking place the next month.
