“If you are not convinced yet there will be creature.” That broken-English promise graces the closing moments of the concept video for Kickstarter project Sierra Zulu, a dark political sci-fi action comedy described as being the bastard offspring of Catch-22 and Buckaroo Banzai. That all sounds great to me, never mind the always-exciting addition of a creature. But just to really nail the hard sell, the project – if funded – will sport a cast that includes Star Trek: Voyager‘s Robert Picardo and Buffy‘s Amber Benson. Check out the vid:
While both the vid and the Kickstarter page are light on details as to how the science fiction will factor in, there are a few more tidbits on offer. The action is set primarily in a U.N. peacekeeping encampment on the border of a tiny, fictional microstate known as Soviet Unterzoegersdorf. One day there’s a mysterious explosion deep inside Soviet territory (just like in Star Trek VI!), and the U.N. crew soon finds themselves in the midst of “a bizarre conspiracy of industrial espionage, media madness and political intrigue.” And somehow involving, apparently, the aforementioned Creature.
With a deadline at the end of the month Sierra Zulu has so far raised about half of the $50,000 target, which will be used to construct the U.N. camp set. As with all Kickstarter projects, pledging different amounts will net you different rewards (just like PBS!), ranging from the trivial (“the right to pursue happiness”) to the faintly disgusting (if a single donor commits more than $19,998, the director will drink a pint of his own blood).
