Serenity Limited-Edition Cutaway Model Is Shiny, Oh So Shiny

We should all be thankful that we’re currently living in a geeky golden age. The Walking Dead got turned into a hit TV show. There are new Star Wars movies in the works, and real reasons to be confident that they’ll help us forget the prequels ever existed. Hell, The Avengers made over a billion dollars and now Marvel is making movies based on Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man. Freaking Ant-Man. But aside from the pop culture landscape being more filled with awesome, geeky things than ever before, it’s also a lot more likely that you can celebrate your fandom with assorted nifty merchandise. It wasn’t that long ago that if you wanted a toy commemorating your favorite obscure, swiftly canceled science fiction show, you’d pretty much have to go to a convention or build it yourself. These days the bounteous internet will give you unfettered access to things such as, for instance, this gorgeous model of the Serenity vessel from Firefly and, well, Serenity.
You can currently sign up on the waiting list for QMX’s oh-so-shiny 12-inch, 1:250 scale cutaway model of Captain Mal’s beloved Serenity. It’s set to ship later this year and will cost you $349. If that seems pricy, clearly your devotion to Firefly is sorely lacking. I kid, I kid. At any rate, the models are going to be numbered and limited to a run of 2,000, so this is a lot more collectible than that Lego X-wing set you picked up for your nephew’s birthday. (Also, the Serenity model would probably hurt a lot less if you step on it in the middle of the night.)
The cutaway sections of the hull stay in place with magnets, but you can remove them to get a look at Serenity’s cockpit, main corridor, and galley, complete with chairs, consoles, rugs and storage lockers. (Tiny damn heroes not included.) QMX also points out that “All the key elements of those sets are reproduced in the model, with some of the interior details measuring barely two millimeters.”
If your sci-fi dreams trend less toward soaring and more towards shooting people in the face, you might be more interested in QMX’s upcoming model of “Vera,” the beloved firearm of the Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne. There’s no word on when it might be released, but you can check out a basic preview video on QMX’s Facebook page.
