Serenity: Leaves On The Wind Writer Spills More Details About The Comic Sequel

We’ve been all waiting for an official sequel to Joss Whedon’s Serenity since the film was released in 2005. After the gigantic success of The Avengers in 2012, many thought Joss Whedon might finally return to the ‘verse with Serenity 2 as his next project. While the odds of that happening anytime soon seem slim given Joss’ Marvel commitments, we will be getting more adventures of Captain Mal and company with the comic book series Serenity: Leaves on the Wind, which is due to be released in January 2014.
Writer Zack Whedon (Joss’ younger brother) penned the new comic book for Dark Horse Comics, along with artist Georges Jeanty. The story is a direct sequel to Serenity and follows the events of the Firefly movie. Whedon recently talked to Comic Book Resources about the series and how it will directly tie-in with what where we last saw the Serenity crew. The story takes begins nine months after the film, with Captain Malcolm Reynolds’ crew on the run once again. Whedon says:
It has been around nine months since the conclusion of Serenity. A lot has changed and a lot has stayed the same. The discovery that Mal and his crew shared with the ‘verse — that the inhabitants of the planet Miranda were killed or driven mad by an Alliance experiment — has opened some eyes and created some new allies, but it hasn’t deterred any of their pursuers. If anything, it has made them more relentless. Serenity is hiding out in lesser-known corners of the ‘verse, trying to keep a low profile. As you will see early on, that’s easier said than done. Mal and his crew will be forced to face their enemies head on — some familiar, some new.
Since Leaves on the Wind takes place nine months after the film, the crew of the spaceship are getting over the loss of Book and Wash, and are ready for more adventures. We’ll finally see how the events on the planet Miranda will affect the ‘verse and the Alliance’s hold on power. It’s going to be very interesting to see how this has changed our beloved crew of the Serenity.
Since 2005, Dark Horse Comics has been releasing new Firefly stories that are canon in the Joss Whedon Firefly ‘verse. Starting with Those Left Behind and following it up with Better Days, The Other Half, The Shepherd’s Tale, Float Out, Downtime, and It’s Never Easy. Leaves on the Wind is planned as a six-issue miniseries, but the possibility has been floated that it might continue beyond that point, just with someone else taking over the writing duties.
About a month ago, Zack Whedon revealed that the story will open with the birth of Zoe and Wash’s new baby, Jayne appears to be missing, and there is a new addition to the crew. While it’s good to see new stories taking place in this ‘verse, it would be so much better if there were a new movie in the works.
Believe it or not, it will be the 10-year anniversary of Serenity and the 13-year anniversary of the Firefly TV series in 2015. As long as there is still an interest in Firefly, a proper Serenity sequel still remains as a possibility. Maybe Joss Whedon can finally tackle a sequel after The Avengers: Age of Ultron makes billions and billions of dollars in the summer of 2015. Keep the faith, Browncoats!
