The Walking Dead’s Scott Gimple On His New Gig As Showrunner

With only five episodes left in season three, The Walking Dead is slowing down the pace before a heated showdown between The Governor and Rick Grimes. The quality of the series was still at a high level even with Glen Mazzara’s exit a few months ago. Yesterday, AMC officially announced that staff writer Scott Gimple would be taking over showrunning duties from Mazzara beginning with season four.
After months of rumors about who would take the job, Gimple has finally commented on the promotion and adding to what Glen Mazzara built earlier this season. Gimple told The Wrap:
I’m thrilled to continue the tradition of the spectacular, cinematic, horrifying, exciting and emotional storytelling of The Walking Dead. I’m a huge fan of the comics, and started with the show on the other side of the set, as an avid viewer. Over the past two years, it’s been an incredible privilege making such great television with the best cast and crew I’ve ever worked with – I can’t wait to make some more.
Yesterday, Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman commented on Gimple’s ability to oversee the TV series. In addition to Gimple’s new job as showrunner, AMC promoted writers Greg Nicotero and Tom Luse to producer status as the cable network is trying to maintain continuity within The Walking Dead‘s writers’ room.

Scott Gimple joined The Walking Dead during its second season, in 2011. He wrote the episode “Save the Last One” (where Shane kills Otis) from season two and “Hounded” (where Rick gets a string of strange phone calls) from season three. He wrote for ABC’s short-lived time-jumping drama FlashForward and co-wrote Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance for directors Neveldine/Taylor.
Considering The Walking Dead’s past with showrunners, you have to wonder how long Scott Gimple will have this job. Hopefully he’ll stick around for a while.
