Nick Frost’s berserker rage (The World’s End)
On its own, Edgar Wright’s The World’s End is a fantastic movie, and one of my favorites of the 2013. Doing for science fiction what he did for zombie movies and testosterone-fueled cop films in his previous flicks, Wright manages, yet again, to defy expectations. Even knowing what you know about his work and approach, especially when teaming up with co-conspirator Simon Pegg, The World’s End is not the movie most people anticipated. Nowhere is this more apparent in Nick Frost’s character, Andy Knightly.
Frost usually provides the comic relief in the form of a broad slacker sidekick or bumbling, good-natured buffoon. Here, however, he plays totally straight. That is, until he blows up in an extreme berserker rage. A reformed addict, Andy is now as straight-laced as they come, almost a prude, only drinking water as his mates pound pint after pint on their epic pub crawl. Frost goes against his established type, but does so flawlessly. One of the true pleasures of The World’s End is watching the pressure build inside of him, until all he can do is go nuts and use a pair of bar stools to tear apart a barroom full of blue-blooded alien robots. When this happens you sit back, a giant grin on your face, and think, “Finally.”
