saoirse ronanNow that Star Wars: Episode VII is firmly in the pre-production casting stages, it’s interesting to hear about who is auditioning for the new movie. A few weeks ago, actress Saoirse Ronan confirmed that she recently auditioned for director J.J. Abrams. The 19-year-old actress has revealed a few key details about the process that may shed light on the role she is up for.

According to the Empire Magazine podcast, Ronan talked about who else has auditioned for Episode VII, and what her character would be if she does indeed get the part. Apparently, Ronan may have auditioned for an unnamed female Jedi. She explained:

Yeah, I did [audition for ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’]… I don’t know whether I should have said that now! I mean, everyone did. Everyone has auditioned for it…So many people I know have gone in for the part I’ve gone in for, and guys who’ve gone in for a particular part, so I’d imagine J.J. is probably just scanning the earth to find the people that he needs.

“Everybody” could mean a lot of things, but Ronan did give a few more substantive hints. She continued, “But nobody has a clue what it’s about, and nobody’s read the script. So I’ve gone in and read for it, but I have to say, I think it’s the only time I’ve ever thought, ‘You know what? Even if I don’t get it, I had so much fun auditioning, pretending to take out a lightsaber – out of a bag, kind of inspect it and not know what it is.’ That was… that was great. A lightsaber! Star Wars!”

As you all know, lightsabers are the preferred weapon of the Jedi Knights. A few months ago, casting details from the production seemed to suggest that the part in question is one of two female leads in the new film. Both roles are supposedly for young women in their late teens with a good sense of humor, who are smart, tough, and fit. This sounds like a Jedi to me.

Episode VII would be a better movie if actors like Saoirse Ronan snag the leading roles. She’s an Academy Award nominated actress and a rising star in Hollywood. This role might be the perfect thing for her emerging career.

At the moment, there are so many casting rumors swirling around that it’s hard to keep track. Recently, Daniel Day-Lewis was rumored to be taking meetings with George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy, while 300: Rise of an Empire star Sullivan Stapleton was mentioned for a role as well. Jonathan Rhys Meyers, David Oyelowo, Michael B. Jordan, Rachel Hurd-Wood, and Alex Pettyfer have all been linked to the new film at certain points, while Benedict Cumberbatch remains a strong favorite among fans of the franchise.
