Rory And Amy Are Leaving Doctor Who

By Josh Tyler | 9 years ago

We’ve heard rumors that this might be happening for awhile, and now it’s been confirmed. Karen Gillan and Arthur Davill, who play Amy and Rory respectively, are leaving Doctor Who. Showrunner Stephen Moffat confirmed their impending departure on Twitter this week, saying “The final days of the Ponds are coming during the next series. Then the Doctor will meet a new friend.”

So we’ve got one more season with Amy and Rory then Matt Smith will have to find a new companion. That doesn’t mean the end of Rory and Amy’s daughter, River Song, though. Moffat says she’s likely to return.

While Amy Pond has been a fantastically popular companion, this is probably for the best. Part of what made Tennant’s turn as the Doctor so great was seeing him play off so many different kinds of companions. Amy and Rory have had a pretty long run in the TARDIS, but Doctor Who standards. What’s next?
