The production of director José Padilha’s (Elite Squad) remake of the 1987 action classic Robocop is quickly rounding out. Last week, the lead of the film, actor Joel Kinnaman (AMC’s The Killing), talked about how gritty, dark and realistic the 2013 version of Robocop will be. If you have seen any of José Padilha other films then you know this to be true. Sony also unveiled their new viral campaign for the dystopian future world and its heavy corporate surroundings, which reflects that Padilha’s sensibility. Well, it doesn’t get any grittier than signing amazing character actor Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children, and Watchmen’s Rorschach) to join the cast of Robocop.

The 51-year-old former child actor (Bad News Bears) is set to play the character of Maddox, a character not in the original 1987 film by Paul Verhoeven. This new addition to the story will portray Maddox giving special military training to Robocop. How do you “train” a cybernetic being? It’s not clear, but wouldn’t it be simply uploading a program. In any event, Jackie Earle Haley will be a fine addition to the growing cast that includes Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish, Samuel L. Jackson and Hugh Laurie.

There are rumors that comedy actor Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up, Goon) may be joining the cast of Robocop as well. Although it is unclear which character Baruchel would play, hopefully it’s not the role of a rookie cop who serves as comic relief like Rob Schneider in Demolition Man or Judge Dredd.

Jackie Earle Haley just finished work on the film Lincoln for Steven Spielberg. Look for the movie Lincoln in theaters this December. As for Robocop, it will hit theaters on August 9th 2013.
