The internet is fertile ground for rumors, conjecture, and hearsay. One of the most recent bits floating about the web is that Robert Pattinson, of Twilight fame, was in the running to play Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. But now haters can breathe a sigh of relief, and fanatics can start to get upset, because it’s confirmed that he is not up for the part.
That would have put the sparkly teen vampire in big screen adaptations of three massive, beloved Young Adult series. The obvious one is Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight books, and Pattinson also appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. If he appeared in Catching Fire he’d have that market cornered, a kind of YA hat trick.
The rumors were so persistent that Pattinson even paused to question their validity. The star told USA Today, “I woke up this morning and saw all these things about me being cast in The Hunger Games…I was kind of curious for a second. So I called my agent.”
His agent’s response was a resounding, “no one’s going to offer you that part.”
The character of Finnick is one of the previous victors of the Hunger Games in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy of YA novels. He was a tribute from District 4, a seafaring people with a propensity for fishing and tying knots, and plays a pivotal role in both Catching Fire and the series finale Mockingjay.
Pattinson is in Cannes for the world premiere of David Cronenberg’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s novel Cosmopolis, which received a standing ovation at the fest.
