Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes Sequel Coming From Contagion Writer

Rise of the Planet of the ApesScott Z. Burns, the writer who spawned Contagion, The Bourne Ultimatum, and The Informant!, has been tasked with writing the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes for Fox. The reboot of the popular franchise was a bit hit with audiences and critics alike. Who doesn’t love monkeys running amok in a major American metropolis?

After an experiment goes wrong and a cadre of hyper-intelligent apes escape from bondage, a virus helps bring about the collapse of the human race. “The new project is taking the story to the next level, with the apes on the path to emerge as society’s new rulers.”

Rise definitely washed away most of the bitter aftertaste of Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes remake, and it will be interesting to see if the continue this with the sequels. Hopefully Fox and company will stay on that path. I for one would love the opportunity to see how Caesar and his cohorts come to prominence.

Andy Serkis, who played Caesar, the main ape, and catalyst for all the action, will be back for the sequel, as will director Rupert Wyatt. We’ve seen what Burns can do with germs and badass super spies, now we’ll see what he has to offer in the way of apes rising to power and taking over the world. As Heat Vision points out, “Burns is well versed in epidemics and breakdowns of society’s orders.” He seems like an excellent choice to handle the scripting duties.

Pandemics, chaos, monkeys, what more can you ask for? This should be fun journey.
