E.T. Returning To Theaters For 30th Anniversary Screenings

Earlier today we showed you the new 30th anniversary trailer for Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, but there was another iconic and impactful science fiction film that left its mark on theaters in 1982. Steven Spielberg’s E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial introduced audiences to a lovable alien, an unforgettable moon shot, and the universal appeal of Reese’s Pieces. Now, three decades later, E.T. is, of course, getting a new Blu-ray/DVD release on October 9th. Before that, however, Spielberg’s classic film will be returning to select theaters, giving fans another chance to see the film once more on the big screen.
The screenings, saddled with the semi-cumbersome title of “TCM Presents: E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial 30th Anniversary Event,” will take place on Wednesday, October 3rd at 7pm local time. If you’re more of an early-afternoon kind of moviegoer, there will also be 2pm matinee showings at some of the theaters. The screenings will feature a snazzy new digitally remastered version of the film, and an intro video from TCM host Ben Mankiewicz.
It’s a nice opportunity for those who never got to see E.T. on the big screen, or those who just want to revisit it, but I’m guessing most E.T. fans will just wait a few extra days and take home the Blu-ray so they can rewatch it at their leisure. Then again, I’d seen Blade Runner dozens of times on video or DVD, but watching it on a big screen during the Final Cut re-release was a totally different and stunning experience, so I may be entirely wrong.
