Resident Evil: Retribution is coming. The fifth installment in director Paul W.S. Anderson’s lucrative videogame-based franchise hits theaters on September 14th, which isn’t too far off. In case you’re unfamiliar with the series, this new trailer will bring you up to speed, and tell you everything you need to know.
The trailer plays like a greatest hits clip show, with the bulk of the video taken up by cuts from the previous films. Through a monotone, vaguely disinterested sounding voiceover, Alice (Milla Jovovich) narrates her tale of woe. She charts her evolution from lowly Umbrella Corporation employee to plague survivor, experimental guinea pig, clone factory, and genetically-modified zombie-killing machine.
Much like the movies themselves, this preview is loud, edited like its actively trying to induce a seizure, and leans heavily on the action side of things. Once you move beyond recounting the earlier chapters, there are glimpses of faces fans of the franchise will recognize. In Retribution Alice teams up with a collection of characters from her past, and goes traipsing across the globe to bring those responsible for unleashing the T-virus, and thus ending the world, to justice. And lets call it as it is, in this scenario justice means killing.
When you watch this do you get the impression that it isn’t real? It feels like everything may be a dream, hallucination, or most likely some sort of artificial reality generated by Umbrella. There are shots of Alice as a suburban housewife, characters that died who look very much alive, and when she says that Umbrella can “manipulate” the entire world, you can’t help but think she’s being toyed with. Let’s hope they stay away from the “it’s all just a dream” cop out. That might be the death knell for series that’s already lasted longer than most people expected.
