Milla Jovovich and her attendant hordes of the undead will return to the big screen on September 14 in the fifth Resident Evil film. Coming Soon posted the official synopsis for the new film installment of the zombie-killing franchise today, originally under the inausipicious title Re5ident Evil: Retribution:
The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, Alice (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella’s most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.
Thankfully, an update to Coming Soon’s initial article says that Sony will actually be releasing the film under the far less ridiculous title Resident Evil: Retribution. Unfortunately, Sony’s statement to Coming Soon didn’t retract any of the pretty rote plot synopsis.
Rather than re-invent or refresh the nearly decade old film arm of the franchise, it sounds like they will just be beating the undead horse. The Umbrella Corporation is evil and mysterious. Alice mows down zombies and henchmen, aided by vague and generic “newfound allies and familiar friends”. At least it will be in “state-of-the art 3D”, which is new for the Resident Evil franchise. Oh wait.
