We’ve known that Red Dwarf X, the tenth season of the British sci-fi sitcom, was coming down the pipe for a few months now. What we haven’t had is a concrete airdate, until now. Red Dwarf X will air on the Dave network at 9pm on Thursdays beginning October 4th.
That’s good news for fans, who have only had the three-episode miniseries Back to Earth in 2009 to get their fix since the end of series eight way back in 1999. There are also new details about the six episodes in the form of quick plot outlines.
The brand new series, written and directed by Doug Naylor, begins with the Dwarfer’s mining ship still creaking though the wastelands of unchartered deep space, but the posse soon stumble upon the mysteriously abandoned SS Trojan. As they inspect the ship Rimmer receives an SOS distress call from an old foe and is suddenly faced with the dilemma of his life.
Fathers and Suns
Lister grapples with the problem of being his own father.
The posse find themselves marooned in 23 AD where they rescue a famous historical figure with a beard.
Kryten and Cat become quantum entangled forcing them to do everything in unison.
Dave gets involved in a love triangle with snack dispensers 23 and 34.
The series’ final episode finds the boys surrounded by a Simulant War Cruiser and its fleet of attack ships. Armed with only two forks and a pencil sharpener, the Dwarfers begin to wonder whether this is the beginning of the end. Only one man can save them.
Unfortunately that man is Arnold J Rimmer.
These sound like classic Red Dwarf plots, especially the boys meeting a certain bearded historical figure, who you can only assume is Jesus, and the love triangle between Lister and a pair of vending machines. I am ridiculously excited for Red Dwarf X. What other show out there has a character who is his own father?
For those of you not familiar with the series, Red Dwarf follows the misfit crew of a deep-space mining ship marooned 3 million years from Earth. It is every bit as ridiculous and wonderful as you can imagine.
